Luvely Press Release
Septempber 2009 (Page 1 of 2)
Following the massive fire on VICTORIA STREET in December, which left The LIQUID ROOM severely damaged, it had become clear by the end of January that our legendary home was going to be out of action for most of the year.
Due to the obvious delays associated with rebuilding an old, listed premise, best estimates placed a reopening of the venue at around January 2010. Further issues were to emerge however as the three separate businesses within the property had varying degrees of insurance cover, creating the potential for yet more delays resulting from long drawn out disputes over who was liable for repairs (March was quickly becoming the most realistic projection as a result). Clearly, a year in itself was going to be far too long for the club to rest back on its laurels, and with no solid date for the Liquid Room reopening - we were going to need to find ourselves a temporary home.
Fortunately, the management of FAITH in the COWGATE had stepped in at very short notice to provide their venue for our first outing of 2009- the 'JANUARY SAIL'. We were also delighted when it was agreed by FESTIVAL INNS (the operator of Faith) that the venue would be available to all club promoters based at the Liquid Room- for as long as it took to reopen its doors. They were even good enough to take on the Liquid Room's door staff for the temporary period to help protect their jobs!
Of course, our unexpected move to what was essentially a mainstream/commercial venue, was initially never going to be to everyone's taste, however, with both the Liquid Room and (soon afterwards) LUNA (formally EGO) no longer available, the choice of suitable venues was becoming very limited indeed. Although we had looked at other venues very closely, none of them (in our opinion) really possessed the right characteristics to host a full on Luvely Production, i.e. not enough roof-space for hanging props, not enough technical support- that kind of thing.
The management of Faith rose to the challenge by making key changes to the venue in a very short space of time, changes which were necessary to host some of Scotland's most popular underground clubs to an acceptable standard. These included the addition of a D&B sound system to bring the PA up to scratch (sourced from the now defunct Luna), the installation of a stage in the main room as there had previously been no focal point for the audience (or somewhere suitable for DJ's to perform). There was also the further addition of an all-new DJ booth in the backroom.
An unexpected bonus turned out to be the venues relatively cheaper running costs, which enabled us to reduce our door prices- quite timely given the current economic problems, and very well received by everyone. We are also planning to hold a 'payback' night later in the year as a result- so keep an eye out for the flyers or an announcement on the homepage as these events are super rare and we wouldn't want you to miss out!
