The Luvely Finale - Our Final Events...
8th March 2011 (page 1 of 2)
This year will see Luvely celebrate its fifteenth birthday- a full decade and a half since the club first opened its doors, and began its monthly quest to throw some of the wildest parties ever seen in the capital. So now that this landmark date is almost upon us, the time has come to announce that Luvely will be hanging up its headphones for the very last time this year.
The Luvely crew have long deliberated as to when should be the most fitting time to bring the show to an appropriate conclusion, and a nice square number was always accepted as being the best option (in fact we even considered putting the club to bed at the tenth birthday, but we felt back then that there were still challenges to be taken on).
The last five years have seen great achievements for Luvely- the club shone amongst some of the biggest names in the business at a number of music festivals, experienced one of its busiest overall years in 2007, and even ran a solo event at the iconic venue- the Arches, all of which would not have happened if we had not chosen to continue past our 10th year. Our decision back then to continue was without any shadow of doubt the right choice ...so why not keep going?
Fifteen years is an eternity in the world of club culture, with only a very small number of clubs ever lasting long enough to see their years go into double figures, such is the very fickle nature of the club scene, particularly as it reflects the musical trends of the moment, and tend to be short lived as a result. Ultimately, all clubs have a limited lifespan, and promoters have to be very careful in judging the right time to retire a brand, as this can mean all the difference between leaving a legend in people’s memories, or dragging the name out to the point of ruining an otherwise great reputation.
Luvely was recently voted Edinburgh’s best club night by the people who matter the most- the clubbers, and so this really proved to be the catalyst for our decision- the reason for this being that we feel that there really isn’t anything left for us to prove. We have always shunned the idea of taking Luvely into the realm of commercialised CD’s, and franchised touring, as this would have diminished what the club is really all about- the very heart, soul & spirit of underground club culture.
Another influencing factor in our decision was the final curtain being drawn upon another of Edinburgh’s original nights- Taste; a club, which had a long history of collaboration alongside Luvely, and shared many of our aims. To us it seemed to herald the end of what many regard as the truly golden era of clubbing, and was a good indicator that the right time to bow out was fast approaching- whilst on a high, and for Luvely to gracefully make way for an entirely new generation of clubs.
