Luvely @ The Arches
July 2008 (page 2 of 2)

Of course the Arches was not to blame for any of this, and if we were going to proceed then we would have to play the game to the Glasgow councils new & highly restrictive rules, after all- we'd come too far down the line to cancel now. So the newly designed promo materials were released, and we pressed on.

The date was finally upon us, Saturday the 5th of July, a day the crew will find hard to forget! Work began to rig both clubs at 6am and wasn't completed right up until half an hour before the gigs began! Indeed rigging was still in progress as the sound-checks commenced! One of the toughest challenges we've ever undertaken had been successfully met.

Both events ran smooth as glass for the full duration of the night. You could have been standing in either of the venues and never have known that the club was running in another city! The only disappointment for us was the lower than expected turnout at the Arches. Despite having been promoted by Glasgow's biggest player it was clear that the Venues situation, combined with the edited flyer & subsequent late promo campaign had taken its toll. Add a KYLIE concert in Glasgow on the same night & the credit crunch biting down hard and you've got the worst possible scenario for trying to fill a club, with all things considered, we're surprised we did as well as we did!

The crew made the decision some days later that obviously the conditions were just too difficult to continue with the next two events, and that it would be best to cancel. Notification was made public on the Glasgow version of our website (yes, you guessed it- a heavily edited version of the one your on now!).

In any case all those who attended the Arches had a ball- ourselves included, and Luvely was well received by both the crowd and the Arches who made us feel right at home. The technical staff were particularly helpful and an absolute dream to work with, they even went so far as to explain to us that the nearest equivalent club that they had worked with in production & décor terms had been HED KANDI which was hardly a bad thing!. We'd like to thank them and everyone else at the venue for all their support in making our first night at the Arches a memorable one.

We'd also like to wish the Arches well in getting back to running at top form, and hope the recent and very much undeserved 6 week suspension of their licence does not discourage them from hosting some of the countries finest clubs in the future.

Luvely will return to the Arches once again when the time is right and conditions permit, and of course we'll be aiming for a separate date from our Edinburgh one next time round. As with our Glasgow events back in 2002 we'll be laying on free transport for you all, so long as we can hire enough coaches for a thousand people that is! …we'll keep you informed!
